A little help for your next great guess

A five letter word finder turns the clues you already have into a list of words you can actually use. Perhaps your puzzle has an R in the second square, an E at the end, and an A somewhere in between. Instead of mentally shuffling the alphabet, put each clue in its place and let the list narrow as you type.

Use it alongside a daily word puzzle, when a crossword clue has you stuck, or to explore unfamiliar words. The tool matches spelling constraints; it does not know today's puzzle answer. Different games accept different word lists, so treat each match as a candidate and check your game's rules before playing it. You can browse the full dictionary, choose an everyday shortlist, or sort common words to the top.

From a few clues to a shorter list

Try this real example: your pattern is _ R _ _ E, you know the word contains A, and S is ruled out. Put R in position 2 and E in position 5. Add A to “Include letters,” then S to “Exclude letters.” The results update immediately: BRACE, BRAKE, BRAVE, CRANE, CRATE, GRACE, GRADE, GRAPE, GRAVE and TRACE are among the matches.

Notice why STARE is not on that list: it contains an excluded S and its R is in the fourth position. APPLE also fails because its second letter is P. If your next clue reveals a C in the first position, type C into the first box; CRANE and CRATE remain useful candidates. Click any result to see how its letters fit, find a short definition when available, and save or copy the word.

Each blank box means “any letter here.” You can paste a pattern such as _R__E into the first box, use arrow keys to move between positions, or press Backspace in an empty box to return to the previous position. The example button above fills the same clues for you, so you can explore the behavior before starting your own puzzle.

Three kinds of clues, one clear answer list

Known positions are exact: a letter in box 2 must be the second letter of every result. Included letters are minimum counts in any position. Entering A means at least one A; entering AA means at least two. A letter in a known position can also satisfy an included-letter requirement, so you do not need to count it twice.

Excluded letters are absent everywhere in the word. Only exclude a letter when you are sure no copy belongs in the answer. If a puzzle marks one copy of a repeated letter gray but another copy green or yellow, use “Guess feedback” under More options: that mode checks the exact feedback, including duplicate counts. You can also disable repeated letters, constrain the beginning or ending, or add a letter rack with ? as a blank tile.

Need exactly two Es? Open More options, choose E under Letter counts, select Exactly and 2, then add the rule. At least and At most are also available. Counts apply to the whole word, including known positions; they do not add extra copies on top of your other clues. The active count can be removed without clearing the rest of your search.
