CAT

Fill a three-letter gap

Use the three letter word finder for a short gap with only a few clues. If the middle letter is A and the word must contain T, put A in box 2 and T in Include letters. CAT, HAT, MAT, RAT and TAX fit. Excluding B removes BAT without affecting CAT. The list changes as you type, so there is no separate search step.

A crossword also gives you a meaning. A pattern narrows the spelling but cannot interpret the clue by itself. Open a candidate to read an available definition, or follow its dictionary link before deciding which word belongs in your puzzle.

Use a short rack without inventing tiles

Under More options, enter CAT in Your letter rack to find ACT and CAT. A rack limits the supply of every letter. A larger rack such as CATS can make three-letter subsets, leaving one tile unused. Include letters is different: it only states what must appear, without limiting other letters.

Enter ? for one blank tile. C?T can supply the A in CAT or the O in COT. The displayed base tile score assumes ordinary letter tiles; a real blank scores zero and board bonuses are not included. This general dictionary is not an official game lexicon.

Short words can repeat letters

ALL, EGG and TOO show why repeated letters matter even with three spaces. Include OO to require two O letters, or switch repeated letters off to rule out duplicates. A position clue and an included letter may refer to the same copy; they are not added together.

If a guessing game marks one copy gray and another green or yellow, use Guess feedback. It checks the complete pattern of colors rather than excluding every copy of that letter. Remove a previous guess without resetting the rest of your clues.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Because the only puzzle
should be your word game.

Can the three letter word finder use only the middle letter?

Yes. Fill box 2 and leave boxes 1 and 3 empty. For example, A in the middle allows CAT and HAT; the puzzle clue still decides which meaning fits. Blank positions mean any letter, not a blank tile. Add ? to a rack only when you actually have a tile that can represent a missing letter.

Are three-letter words automatically valid in my game?

No. Our general English word list includes uncommon entries. Game dictionaries differ; use your game's accepted-word list as the final check.

Can I keep the complete list?

Yes. All words is the default. Common first changes the order without removing matches; Everyday is an optional, incomplete editorial shortlist.

How do I find a short word with exactly two Os?

Open More options, set O to Exactly 2 under Letter counts and add the rule. TOO fits. Keep repeated letters enabled, otherwise the two requirements conflict. If you also enter a rack, it must contain both Os or enough blank tiles to supply them.
